MBA programs have long been associated with people in the private sector – corporate executives and managers who want to improve their stature within the organization and become better leaders. However, MBA programs are actually not just for them. Even the managers from the public or government sector can benefit greatly from the education and training provided by MBA programs.
It would seem awkward at the start. For someone in the government or public sector, why would you pursue an MBA, what will you put in your personal statement MBA. The personal statement MBA – the basis for your application essays – seems to pose a very introspective question: why do you want an MBA? For the personal statement MBA, you need to know how an MBA degree can help you in your industry. You need to be aware of how management training can help you function better in the government organization setting.
For one thing, an MBA degree teaches you leadership. This can give you the confidence to spearhead (and even conceptualize) projects. You will gain advanced problem solving skills and learn about techniques in working in the public sector. Likewise, since the government or the public sector is really not a world on its own, you will learn about the other industries. In knowing the ins and outs or the other industries, you can negotiate the government or public sector’s position more, when the time comes.
There are standard MBA programs available for you. Here you will learn the gamut of management and leadership, applicable for whatever industry you’re in. There are also MBA program options that specialize on the needs of those in the public sector. Here, you will gain extensive education on public policy, management of political systems, financial theory, ethics and international economics. This way, you get your MBA while keeping your focus on your chosen sector.
