February 21st, 2010
Before you start writing your admission essay, it pays a lot to know the fundamental characteristics or profile of your marketing MBA program. One reason for this is that you will be relating some of your personal goals and values to the program’s requirements.
What you need to know about marketing MBA programs when writing your application essay
First, take note of the requirements of this MBA program. What kinds of subjects will be discussed in the course? What are the things you can learn from this course and how can this enhance your knowledge and skills in the marketing field. You need to know all these so you can come up with great reasons for applying for the program and write them down in your MBA application essay. Taking up MBA would require a lot of time from you, not to mention that you also have to finance your education. Without a clear idea what you’re getting into, the admissions office may not consider you an apt candidate.
Tips for writing an MBA personal statement that stands out
1. Before you write anything, take time to reflect on why you are applying for the program. What would be the benefits? Will it help you advance your career or will it give you leverage in the ever-growing marketing field? Consider the pros and cons, including the cost, schedule, and time it would require from you.
2. Remember that originality counts. Include at least two experiences with colorful details. This should assure you that your paper would not come out as another generic piece of MBA essay. Don’t make it too long though, but focus on experiences that best relate to your MBA application.
3. Highlight the benefits of the MBA program. Talk about skills enhancement and how your work experience or interest in the field can make you the perfect candidate for the marketing MBA program. This will give your MBA admission essay some sense of purpose.

Pitfalls of Writing Online MBA Essays
February 21st, 2010
A lot of applicants keep on hearing from the experts that a too formal tone on the MBA admission essay is a sure way to get rejected. But a too casual tone is no good advice either. When submitting MBA personal statements online, make sure that your admission essay still has the qualities of a well-written piece.
Using a tone that’s too casual for your MBA essay
It is okay to have an admission essay that is serious and ambitious. After all, you want to show your readers how serious you are about getting an MBA degree. What you must avoid is a tone that is too casual for MBA application. Though submitted online, your admission essay should not be as casual as your friendly e-mails. Still take note of your punctuations and avoid shortcuts. The text lingo is a definite no-no, if you want your application to be taken seriously by the admissions board.
Using a writing style that’s too informal for MBA application essays
Though you are advised to submit a personal MBA application essay, it must not sound like you’re simply writing to a friend. Your essay should exhibit effective communication and critical thinking skills. You must clearly express yourself. Though advised to use less complex sentence structures and simpler but effective phrases and words, you must show some depth as well. Don’t make your essay too informal. Take note of your competition. They can easily overshadow your application if you don’t put much effort in stating your real purpose and explaining what makes you a good fit for the program.
When writing an online MBA essay, the common mistake is getting too personal with the readers, to the point that your essay sounds too casual. You must not risk your chances for admission. Remember to edit thoroughly not only for grammatical errors and spelling mistakes but also for relevant content.

How Not to Get Stuck when Writing Your MBA Essay
February 21st, 2010
When writing your MBA essay, you might have a hard time making a winning piece. Knowing how important your MBA essay is in your application, you can easily feel the pressure, start to panic, and lose focus. But this is just normal for any applicant who is aspiring to get into his or her chosen MBA program. If you get stuck in writing your MBA essay, there are things you can do to finish writing the whole page. Here are some tips:
MBA essay writing tip 1: Write everything that comes to mind and edit later
A lot of writers hesitate about writing whatever comes to mind, thinking that they’re irrelevant and would only make the essay look like a random piece, with no clear direction. However, this shouldn’t stop you from filling the page with your thoughts. This is a good way to bring out all ideas about your MBA application. From this, you can create your first draft. Though your draft may appear imperfect, you can always weed out the unnecessary details and edit the article for content, style, and technical lapses. The key is to get started with your writing. You can always edit your MBA essay later on to come up with a better write-up.
MBA essays tip 2: Read sample admission essays to inspire you
You have at your disposal hundreds of sample admission essays to check out. When you read others’ works, even if they do not have the same topic as yours, you’ll still be able to get pointers on style, tone, presentation, and maybe a creative idea that you want to use or explore further in your own essay.
One reason why many waste so much time in the writing process is they hesitate too many times over things that should be written down at once. Even professional writers don’t get it right the first time. Their exceptional piece goes through a series of editing as well. Simply the best way to combat writer’s block is to get started with your writing. You’ll then be surprised that some of the things you’ve written down actually make sense and can be used to pull together a winning MBA essay.

Sources of sample essays for statement writing
Someone with your motivation and determination is bound to have friends-or at least, know a person-who attended graduate or professional school. Ask them if it is all right with them to furnish you a copy of their personal statement. Explain that you intend to use it only as a reference to help you come up with your own ideas. If this does not seem to be feasible, as some people might have privacy concerns, pay a visit to your college’s career guidance office or that of the business school you plan to apply to. You may also have access to sample essays on business school websites.
An effective application essay can sometimes spell the difference between getting accepted and rejected by the business school of your choice. This happens particularly when there is a close fight between candidates in terms of grades, GMAT scores, and other academic achievements. To know what the admissions board is looking for, and to keep yourself from making a fatal mistake when writing your essay, use MBA personal statement samples as a guide. You can ask your friends to lend you theirs, or you can access them from career guidance offices and university websites.

January 29th, 2010
Admissions officers have been doing their job of selecting students for a long time. They have read thousands of essays each year, so the task of making your essay worth remembering becomes even more challenging. The following tips will help you come up with an interesting and unique admission essay:
Ideas for MBA admission essay topics
Exceptional essays are well-written and unique in content. Writing one requires you to come up with interesting ways to share substantial information about yourself and your personal and professional goals. Every other applicant will be discussing similar things: aims, accomplishments, and personal experience. The biggest challenge here is how you can articulate common ideas in unique ways. Before you start writing, spend sufficient time for examining your goals and planning your writing approach. What significant experiences make me distinct is one of the important questions to ask yourself before writing a personal statement. Focus on insights you have gained, events that made an impact on you the most, and how these have molded your perspective. You may consider trips you have taken and people you have met, and write as if you are literally walking your reader through your experience.
MBA school admission essay tips when coming up with a unique topic
As you plan the structure of your essay, concentrate on a single yet solid theme that can hold together relevant information about you. For instance, you can begin with a story about how an activity or lesson in college reminded you of the fulfillment you had felt after selling your first glass of lemonade as a child. This makes for an interesting introduction, which you can segue into what drives you to pursue an MBA. Make sure that your distinctive experiences have smooth transitions, so they will not appear as a hodge-podge of irrelevant anecdotes.
Admission officers have reviewed so many applicants that all admission essays begin to sound alike to them. To make yours stand out, write about unique topics and present them in an interesting way. Read sample introductions for personal statements to help you come up with unique topics that are appropriate for you.

Writing MBA Admission Statements That Stand Out
January 29th, 2010
Some applicants to business schools make the mistake of taking the admission essay for granted. Regardless of your grades and GMAT/GRE scores, your MBA admission statement should be exceptional. It is the part of the selection process in which you have more control over, so use this as an opportunity to present yourself as something more than just a set of numbers. Here are some tips on how you can write an outstanding application essay:
Looking at an MBA sample admissions essay for elements that make an essay stand out
Even a good writer can fail to deliver if he or she does not know what the readers are interested in. To find out what your readers-the members of the selection committee-are looking for, use sample essays as reference. Instead of just browsing through any sample, pay particular attention to essays written by MBA applicants who have passed the admissions process. Since they succeeded in getting into the business school, using their essays as guide gives you the advantage of learning what actually works. The key components of an effective admission essay include your personal motivations, life experiences, and achievements. As you study sample essays, examine how the writers present their perspective on the role an MBA degree plays in advancing their personal and professional goals. Notice that these samples simply do not tell but show how and why the writers were inspired to pursue their studies. This will help you assess your own reasons and give you ideas on how to get started.
Online MBA sample application essays as guides
You can count on the Internet to direct you to good sources. Use your preferred search engine or go directly to the website of the business school you are applying at. A word of caution, though: Do not fall into the trap of using these essays as your template. MBA essay writing secrets work well only if you can communicate reasons and experiences that are specific to you. If you simply replace the details in the sample essay with your own, you will put your chances of getting accepted at risk. Your essay will fail to present your personal perspective, and even worse, the admission board will most likely realize that you simply copied it from a sample.
You need to set yourself apart from thousands of hopefuls. Let your essay give you an advantage. Study sample essays written by successful candidates to learn what components should be included in your essay. However, use these only as a guide and not as a template.

Rockey’s Journey to an MBA is also about the writer?s personal experiences in finding the right graduate school, filling up applications, and submitting the requirements. The informative posts
There are posts that talk about the blogger?s realization in the midst of his journey. I also find the posts about Wharton essays very interesting. Here, the blogger discusses how challenging it is to finish the essays. He also shared his game plan in writing the essay. These posts make this blog a good resource for MBA applicants.
The layout and design
The blog is a good read because of the information that the blogger shares about his applications to different schools. The layout is neatly done, which I find very pleasing to the eyes. The middle column shows the blogs in chronological order, while visitors can find a list of top posts on the left column and a list of categories on the right. These are really helpful in seeing the contents of the blog.
However, the blog can also benefit from a design makeover. It has a pretty basic layout and overall design, which works for some. But if the blog intends attract more frequent visitors, there has to be some pictures and videos to make it more interesting.

Critique of MBA Outlook
November 15th, 2009
The MBAoutlook blog tackles everything about the MBA industry, which makes it a great resource for people who plan to take their MBA or for people who are actually studying to finish their degrees. The varied posts makes it really interesting. It covers information about MBA all over the world. Yes, it does not only talk about MBA in the US or UK. You can even find information about MBA in Asia.
What I love about this site
One blog post that I really loved reading is about unemployment. I really loved the insights that Joel Friedman shared in this post. Indeed, unemployment is a difficult phase in every person?s life. A person?s job is part of his or her identity, and if that is taken away, that person will somehow feel incomplete or inadequate, not to mention the negative effects that it can bring to a family. He also talked about the importance of communication and knowing how to brand one?s self.
It is also great to read a list of the best business books in the market today. It covers topics about communication, decision-making, productivity, project management, marketing, sales, and many more. There?s a book review for every title in each topic.
To prove how varied the topics are, there is one blog post about testosterone and women traders. It talked about the scientific studies, which showed the relationship of testosterone and the risk-taking behavior of women.
On a personal note
Because of the multitude of information that the blog contains, a first-time visitor may find it cluttered or overwhelming. It is good that the blog is simple and easy to the eyes. It used white as the background color with fonts that are readable. The tabs at the top of the page are also very helpful in navigating around the site. It is really quite easy to find a particular topic that interests the visitors.
